Do Bananas Lower Testosterone Levels Naturally?
Does eating bananas lower testosterone levels in men? Research has shown that yes, bananas do reduce testosterone levels in men. It is not exactly known why, but it appears to be due to the potassium and amino acid content found in bananas. Probably the most common way to eat bananas is through a dessert.
The Mayo Clinic study found that men with low testosterone levels had lower body mass index (BMI) as well as increased fat mass (percentage of body weight). Furthermore, men with low testosterone also had more elevated levels of cortisol, which is a stress hormone. In addition, the men with high levels of cortisol also had high blood pressure, diabetes, and heart disease. Now, we all know that high levels of cortisol are associated with a high risk of cardiovascular disease, so it stands to reason that eating the occasional bananas might help to control those high levels of stress! It would also make sense to keep those cortisol levels in check by exercising on a regular basis.
Testosterone is primarily made by the testes, but it is also produced by the adrenal glands and by cells in the pancreas. Testosterone is needed for reproductive activities, energy production, bone growth, and muscle mass. As men get older, their testosterone levels begin to decrease due to age-related decline, as well as from other causes. The testosterone levels in your body to decrease with age because your testes stop producing as much testosterone as before, and your adrenals and pituitary gland to stop producing testosterone as well. So, how does eating bananas directly affect testosterone levels?
The study found that when men with low testosterone levels were given high fat diets, their BMI increased and they had increased fat, muscle mass, and cortisol levels. When they were given an extra serving of potato chips per day, their BMI decreased slightly but their levels of cortisol did not increase. This is because cortisol is a stress hormone and increases your body’s ability to tolerate stress. So, when you eat a great deal of fat, your body is better able to deal with stress, which means it can properly handle strength training.
Another study performed on bodybuilders showed that those who ate an excess of protein (but no eggs) had significantly lower body fat compared to those who had eaten no egg at all. Again, this supports the notion that eating protein directly results in higher testosterone levels and increased muscle mass. Another study performed on NCAA players showed that athletes who ate more protein had higher levels of testosterone than those who ate carbohydrates. Also, athletes who ate eggs didn’t have lower testosterone levels than those who didn’t. So again, protein just seems to naturally boost testosterone levels.
A third set of studies looked at college athletes and found that those who ate large amounts of eggs had significantly lower low testosterone levels as well as lower muscle mass. This supports the idea that eating lots of eggs results in lowered testosterone production. But the most interesting study was conducted on older men who weren’t currently doing anything but playing baseball. The study found that the larger the amount of protein in a person’s diet, the lower his age-related testosterone decline was! And, he had to keep this diet for up to five years!
